Royal Army Chaplains' Department Button, Gilt (24L)
There have been chaplains serving the military since at least 430 A.D. In 1796, the Army Chaplains' Department was founded. Prior to 1827, only Church of England clergy were permitted; however, that year saw the authorization of Presbyterians, who were then followed by Roman Catholics in 1836, Wesleyans in 1881, and the first Jewish chaplain in 1892.
